Name: Catriona M.
Role: Senior Business Development Rep
Area: Sales, United Kingdom
Briefly describe your current role and the team you work with.
I am a Business Development Representative (BDR) in the Zettle by PayPal (Zettle) Inside Sales team. I am responsible for qualifying inbound and outbound leads for potential merchants in the UK. Inbound leads are merchants who have requested a phone call via our website, whereas outbound leads could be merchants who have never heard of Zettle or were once customers but left for various reasons.
Could you provide some insights into your career journey? How long have you been with PayPal?
I have been in my role since August 2021. Prior to this, I worked in various sales positions including consumer and business sales. The BDR position at Zettle was an opportunity to expand my experience in this industry.
Could you outline the core responsibilities and daily tasks that define your role?
I manage inbound and outbound leads daily, which includes having conversations with potential merchants to qualify them before introducing them to our Market Development Team. This means I’m the first point of contact for businesses interested in PayPal’s solutions. I share product knowledge to create enough interest for the merchant to want to continue the conversation with a Market Development Manager.
What aspects of your role do you find particularly interesting and exciting?
I enjoy having conversations with people and learning about their business needs and requirements. It’s rewarding when you see these initial conversations eventually result in businesses starting to use Zettle.
What skills and qualities are essential for someone to succeed in your role?
I believe that to be a successful BDR, communication skills are vital as we are typically the first impression merchants have of Zettle. Also, product knowledge is important to give merchants an understanding of whether Zettle is a suitable product for them. Additionally, the ability to set clear goals and manage your day accordingly to achieve your target is something that is essential to succeed.
What's something you appreciate about your team? Or, share a fun fact about the team or a recent project.
Recently, I, together with three other female colleagues on my team, collaborated with other female colleagues within the wider Zettle sales team on a career development project. Organised by one of our sales leaders, this project gives us the opportunity to share experiences with each other and learn from other female leaders. It has been an extremely inspiring and empowering program to be a part of. We have various activities planned for the rest of the year with one of the main goals being to outline our career paths and develop an individual plan on how to drive forward.
