Name: Vignesh D.

Role: Data Scientist

Area: Engineering, India

Briefly describe your current role and the team you work with.

I am presently working as Data Scientist in one of the machine-learning team in PayPal. I currently spearhead design and development of an Anomaly Detection (AD) Engine that aids our core products and business teams in identifying unforeseen anomalous events along with their root cause. As a builder, my role is to challenge the existing set of models, test them, and explore new ones to integrate into our anomaly detection framework.

Could you provide some insights into your career journey? How long have you been with PayPal?

I have been with PayPal for the past two years. During this time, PayPal has aided in both my technical and personal growth. I have had a good number of opportunities to learn new technologies and models thanks to PayPal’s learning platforms. The amount of exposure I have gotten from working with a diverse range of teams has had a fair impact on my growth in communication and presentation skills. Overall, the above-mentioned experiences have aided my transformation from a mentee to a mentor, over this short span of time.

Could you outline the core responsibilities and daily tasks that define your role?

My role involves close collaboration with various teams, including business, engineering, and key product teams, to identify and prioritize their core focus areas. I begin by scoping out a solution approach for the challenges they present. This process entails extensive research into different statistical models and rigorous testing with data provided by these teams. Armed with these insights, I then construct and implement a comprehensive solution, leveraging the knowledge and experience gained from the previous steps. Post-implementation, I proactively engage with these teams to assess the impact of my product and gather valuable feedback. This feedback loop is essential for continuously refining and enhancing my model, ensuring it remains effective and responsive to the evolving needs of the org.

What aspects of your role do you find particularly interesting and exciting?

With the ever-evolving landscape of machine learning, the role of a data scientist demands constant agility and adaptability. I’ve embraced this dynamic environment, continuously delving into the latest machine-learning models and putting them to the test with real-world data. This hands-on experience allows me to directly apply these insights to enhance our products. The inherent learning curve in my role is both enriching and exhilarating. As I see the tangible impact our product has on the business, product, and engineering teams, it adds an extra layer of excitement to the journey.
