Senior Data Scientist

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating the voices and impact of LGBTQ+ employees across PayPal under the theme Visible, Empowered, and Proud. Through the work of our Pride Employee Resource Group (ERG), we’re committed to building an inclusive and welcoming workplace where LGBTQ+ employees feel seen, supported, and valued. We’re excited to spotlight individuals from across our global teams who are helping foster belonging, advocate for change, and lead with pride.

Meet Saim S.

He’s a Senior Data Scientist on the Checkout Growth team at PayPal. Since beginning his data science journey in 2019, Saim has been passionate about using data to drive meaningful impact. Today, he focuses on understanding how customers engage with our checkout experience and translates those insights into improvements that make the process faster, simpler, and more intuitive.

We interviewed Saim to learn more about his work with PayPal’s Pride ERG and what Pride month means to him.

“My one piece of advice: show up as your full, authentic self.”

What motivated you to join the Pride ERG and in what ways has volunteering strengthened your connection to the LGBTQ+ community?

I’ve been at PayPal for about two years, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to grow in a space that values both innovation and inclusion.

As a first-generation immigrant from Pakistan who wasn’t always able to live openly, I know how meaningful it is to feel a true sense of belonging — especially in the workplace. That’s what initially motivated me to join the Pride ERG at PayPal. When I learned that our Chicago office didn’t have local Pride leadership, I stepped into that role to help fill the gap and start building community from the ground up.

How do you use your voice and visibility to inspire others?

Our Chicago chapter of Pride has grown significantly. We’ve already hosted four events this year, with many more on the way; from social gatherings to educational panels. Now that we’ve returned to the office, it’s been incredibly rewarding seeing this community come to life in person.

I didn’t grow up seeing people like me living openly, let alone thriving at work. Visibility was something I had to grow into slowly and on my own terms. It wasn’t always comfortable, but I learned that staying hidden only keeps others from feeling safe to be themselves. Showing up authentically isn’t just about me, it’s about making space for those still figuring it out. That’s why I care so deeply about creating space for others. It’s not always about big statements. Sometimes it’s about being approachable, showing up authentically, or simply wearing something that signals, "You’re safe here."

Is there a Pride event you’ve helped organize that you’re especially proud of?

One event I’m especially proud of organizing was a Pride-themed trivia experience we hosted at the office. We brought in a local game designer and a drag performer to co-host, which made for a fun, inclusive atmosphere. The trivia blended general knowledge with LGBTQ+ history and culture, and our hosts helped create a warm, welcoming space that encouraged participation, connection, and community building. It was a great example of how we celebrate Pride while strengthening our sense of belonging at work.

Any advice you want to share on how others can feel empowered to share their voice?

My one piece of advice: show up as your full, authentic self. Being open and honest about who you are can give others the confidence to do the same. The smallest acts of visibility often have the greatest impact.
