We're excited to highlight Amanda D. in this week's Employee Spotlight, in honor of Small Business Month.
Tell us about your role and career journey at PayPal:
I manage a team of six Sales Representatives and two Business Development Representatives. I started at PayPal in 2021 as a Business Development Representative, where I was quickly promoted to an inside sales Account Executive role, working with new and existing merchants in the SMB space. I was promoted to a team leader role after a year and a half, giving me the opportunity to get into leadership while staying an individual contributor. The SMB sales team was then segmented into portfolio back-book motions and new-acquisition sales. I raised my hand to join the new team that was front book focused, excited to find new merchants for PayPal, and to build a strong sales culture. Leveraging my experience as a team leader, I was able to contribute to the successful launch of this segment by servicing small businesses adding PayPal. This led to an opportunity to become a sales leader and have a team of account executives under my umbrella after three and a half years at PayPal. Over the last year and a half, we have enjoyed significant success as a team in catering to new SMB accounts for PayPal, offering the full suite of payment solutions and consultations.
What kinds of people excel on your team?
We have a diverse team of sellers, most of whom come in from external roles. Their backgrounds all have some sales or consultation experience. Their other common thread is that they are self-starters and not afraid to fail forward. They have all found success in their roles by staying curious, organized, and customer focused. We recently promoted someone into an Account Executive role who had experience in inside sales and joined PayPal through business development.
"What we have to offer has true value, and we know that what we bring to the table is making an impact on the businesses we work with."
What makes your team's work meaningful to PayPal's mission and customers?
We stay focused on the core of what PayPal offers: quick, easy payment solutions for small business owners, optimized checkout for ultimate choice, and a frictionless buying experience. Our network of partners, global reach, and suite of payment products make us the perfect consultative partner in the SMB space. We take care of a wide range of customers, from start-ups to fully established multi-million-dollar businesses, and each conversation is held with care and focus. What we have to offer has true value, and we know that what we bring to the table is making an impact on the businesses we work with.
How do PayPal's leadership principles shape your approach to leading your team and the way you show up each day?
Our team could not win the way we do without our network of support. While we work merchant-facing, there are so many people behind the scenes who put those businesses first to make sure we deliver what we promise. The 'win together' mindset is something we completely embody. Not only does that allow us to work customer-back, but it is also so much fun. There are so many smart and amazing people at PayPal that I'm grateful to tap on the shoulder and bring into a conversation. Working customer-back is the heart of our team. We know that each day = dollars, especially for growing businesses, so we always prioritize merchant needs, pull in whoever we need, and work with urgency. We work as one team in my department and across PayPal.
What do you enjoy most about working at PayPal?
I love the people I work with at PayPal and the merchants we get to work with. I am so grateful to have confidence in what PayPal, Venmo, BNPL, and our suite of products do for our customers. When we work together, we make things easier for our entire network of customers and merchants. It really does work; it really will create a better buying experience, boost sales, and build trust in your brand. The merchants we work for are so grateful for our help and support, and my team is so knowledgeable and consultative. It's something really special to be where I am in the company right now.
